From the moment he opened his eyes, he's had a funny way of looking at life. 'FUNNY AND MOVING AND WORTH SEEING'. Oracle This superbly funny and entertaining movie is based on the runaway international best-seller by John Irving, impressively written for the screen by Steve Tesich (who wrote the hit comedy Breaking Away) and directed with great skill by George Roy Hill, Oscar-winner for The Sting. And, said the Sunday Telegraph, 'for the sheer dexterity of the film-making and the richness of the themes it tackles, GARP would have to be one of my desert island films of 1983'. The rich and fascinating story follows the sometimes surreal progress of Garp - very well played by Robin Williams, well-known for his starring role in television's Mork and Mindy - as he becomes a famous writer, husband and father, only to have his own literary efforts eclipsed by his mother who writes a best-selling autobiography entitled A Sexual Suspect which triggers off a sometimes violent feminist crusade. The whole cast give flawless performances, notably John Lithgow, who won an Oscar nomination for his performance as a football star who changes his sex, Glenn Close as Garp's mother and Mary Beth Hurt as his wife and, said the Glasgow Herald, it is 'something of an exceptional film' while the Los Angeles Times commented that 'those who loved the book will love the film'. © Warner Bros, Inc.
