Original Cinemascope Version ROME - 33 A.D. The headstrong young tribune Marcellus Galleo (Richard Burton) offends the Emperor's nephew - Caligula, and is banished to the garrison in Jerusalem. He takes with him his Greek slave Demetrius (Victor Mature). There he is given the routine assignment of supervising the crucifixion of three men. In a dice game he wins the only possession of the man on the centre cross - his robe. Upon hearing the man's dying words from the cross, Marcellus is driven half-mad with fear and guilt, and believes the robe is bewitched. Demetrius, who has become a follower of the dead man, takes the robe from Marcellus and deserts him. The story of how Marcellus regains the robe, his sanity - and his ultimate salvation, aided by the beautiful Diana (Jean Simmons) is unfolded in one of Hollywood's most spectacular, lavish and moving epics. © 20th Century-Fox Corp.
