From sub-zero temperatures of the polar ice-caps to the baking heat of the deserts, from the ash-strewn sides of a volcano to the dense vegetation of a tropical forest, the enviroments on Earth are no less remarkable than the variety of life itself. And almost nowhere on our planet is devoid of life. In this special two-part video based on the award-winning BBC television series, David Attenborough and some of the world's leading wildlife cameramen explore the habitats on Earth and reveal some of the amazing plant and animal adaptations to them. The towering peaks of the Himalayas, the polar wastelands of snow and ice, vast coniferous forests, tropical jungles, seas of grass in South America Africa, the scorched sands of the Sahara and Kalahari - they all support life. In part one of The Living Planet David Attenborough takes us to these spectacular and awesome enviroments to see the infinite variety and complexity of life forms. Snow Leopards, emperor penguins, great grey owls, flying snakes, giant armadillos - all these and many more illustrate the astonishing ingenuity of Nature through amazing wildlife photography. © A BBC Television co-production with Time Life Films.
