This outstanding video combines the film artistry of Sir David Lean and the musical talents of his longtime composer, Maurice Jarre. It is a rich tapestry of live symphonic performance together with clips from Lean's most famous films: "Lawrence of Arabia," "Dr. Zhivago," "A Passage to India," and "Ryan's Daughter." The collaboration between David Lean and Maurice Jarre is unique in cinema history. It began in 1962, and extended for 28yrs until David Lean's death in 1990. Jarre's musical themes have become signature works, forever identified with each of Lean's films. And Jarre's three Oscar's for best film music, awarded for his scores for "Lawrence of Arabia" in 1963, "Dr. Zchivago" in 1966, and "A Passage to India" in 1985, represnt an incomparable achievement. Director L.A. Johnson has captured a stirring live performance with Maurice Jarre conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a program of extended symphonic suites drawn from his classic scores. Striking, soaring and intimate images of this world famous, 91 - member orchestra are interwoven with clips carefully selected and compiled from four of Lean's most memorable films. The viewer is immediately drawn into an epic universe of sight and sound. And in one sequence, using footage from "A Passage to India" as illustration, Jarre demonstrates the magic of the composer's art in matching music, mood and image.
