A man (MARLON BRANDO) and a girl (MARIA SCHNEIDER) meet by chance in an empty apartment one winter morning in Paris. Separately they inspect the rooms, seemingly with no interest in each other. But suddenly there is contact, an explosion, and they make passionate, violent love. As Paul and Jeanne leave the building, they know, without words, they will meet here again. But they agree never to talk about their lives outside, to reveal their names, to discuss their families, their friends, their work, their past. Is it possible to construct a rapport beyond all social conventions? That is the adventure upon which Paul and Jeanne embark. Outside, in their world of contemporary Paris, we follow them separately into their private lives where each will never meet the other, Jeanne is about to be married to Tom (JEAN-PIERRE LEAUD), a young television film-maker, Paul is seeking to understand the recent unexplained suicide of Rosa (VERONICA LAZARE) his wife. Here are two marriages, one to be made in all the freshness and enthusiasm of youth, the other to be buried with the dead, unfaithful wife, whose lover, Marcel (MASSIMO GIROTTI) also lives at the seedy Paris hotel where Paul and Rosa spent their life. But when Paul and Jeanne, can be together in their private island of the empty apartment their erotic encounters become more intense, even dangerous And their pact becomes more and more difficult to keep up. Is there a place for these two outside. k the real, everyday world? Caught in the whirl of a vortex, they dance out their strange, poetic, doomed last tango in Paris.
