Violetta, a Parisian courtesan has not long to live, but she is distracted from her extravagant and capricious life by her love for the young nobleman Alfredo. They elope, but when Alfredo's father arrives to explain the consequences of her actions to Violetta, Alfredo is forced to flee and the stage is set for the sad events which follow. Anna Moffo delivers a superlative performance of this, perhaps Verdi's finest and best loved operatic work.
