...a hand grenade of a film...
makes you laugh even as your blood chills!
Lindsay Anderson's 'If' is set in a fictitous but authentic Public School. College ressembles for the Winter Term. The boys of College House inspect lists, find their place and unpack their things. College settles down to routine. Chapel. Learning. Games. The myth of "the happiest days" dies hard, for this is school without tradition, sentimentality or gloss.
Starring Malcolm McDowell as Mick and Arthur Lowe as the feeble house master 'If' is alternatively funny and bizarre. The film moves from intimate scenes of life in a boy's world, through fantasy and farce, to violent climax as discontent turns into rebellion.
