Dantes is a sailor who is appointed Captain of the ship he is sailing after - his predecessor dies and this causes great jealousy in Danglars, and he conspires with Fernand Mondego. They inform the Prosecutor that Dantes is a Bonapartist and is carrying secret information about Napoleon. Dantes finds himself being shipped to the notorious and impregnable fortress of the Chateau d' if to be unjustly and unlawfully imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. It is in the accursed Chateau d' if he meets Abbe Faria, who helps him to escape after 14 long, intolerable years of captivity. As the Abbe lies dying he relates to Dantes a tale of a secret treasure hidden on the Spanish Island of Monte-Cristo. Dantes escapes from the fortress and is rescued from the sea by Italian pirates with whom he joins forces and they search for the treasure. Dantes finds the treasure and returns to France, taking up residence in Paris as the rich, revered COUNT OF MONTE- CRISTO.
