250 million dollars in gold. The Nazis hid it. The Russians want it. The American steal it. General George S. Patton may die for it. In the aftermath of World War 2 millions are left struggling to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives: men and women living on their wits, one eye on staying alive, the other on making a fast buck. Men like Webber - an ice cool performance from Max von Sydow - who is qick to exploit the fact that there is no more fertile ground for the opportunist than a country still echoing with the sounds of war. Woman like Maria - a typically fiery performance from superstar Sophia Loren - a refugee who uses her beauty to stay one step ahead of starvation. And in the midst of it all there's the army, mostly trying to keep order in the chaos but sometimes out to make a little on the side before they go home. Soldiers like the unpredictable Colonel McCauley, played by Patrick McGoohan; Major Joe De Lucca played by John Casavetes; Colonel Dawson, played by Bruce Davison, a young army officer sent to investigate a ruthless act of robbery - and prehaps the ost notorious army man f them all General George S. Patton,Jr., played by George Kennedy. The film is primed from the opening scene and before its dramatic climax , suspense has reached even the highest rank. © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.
