Celebrated novelist Charles Condomine (Rex Harrison) is writing a thriller about mediums. To help him with his research he and his second wife Ruth invite to dinner Madame Arcati (Margaret Rutherford) a medium, and neighbours Dr. and Mrs Bradman. After dinner they hold a seance and summon the spirit of Elvira, Charles' first wife.
Ruth and Madame Arcati frantically attempt to send Elvira back, but she has devised a scheme to have Charles with her forever - with hilarious results!
